What is depth of field?
Depth of field is the distance between the nearest and farthest points in a scene that appear acceptably sharp. It depends on focal length, aperture (f-stop), focus distance, sensor size and the selected circle-of-confusion standard. DoF Mate calculates the near limit, far limit and total depth of field for the setup you enter.
How do you calculate hyperfocal distance?
Hyperfocal distance is the focus distance that keeps everything from half that distance to infinity acceptably sharp. It is derived from focal length, aperture and the circle of confusion for your sensor. DoF Mate shows your hyperfocal distance live as you change any setting.
Does DoF Mate work offline?
Yes. Every calculation runs entirely on your iPhone, so DoF Mate works with no signal — on location, in a studio, or anywhere on set. The camera sensor database is bundled and can refresh when you do have a connection.
Which cameras and lenses are supported?
DoF Mate includes starter camera profiles for offline use and can refresh a broader searchable sensor database when a connection is available. You can pair a profile with manual focal length and aperture controls, including 1×, 1.33×, 1.5× and 2× anamorphic squeeze factors.
How do I set focus distance?
Measure or estimate the subject distance using the same method you trust on set, then enter it with the focus-distance gauge. DoF Mate does not claim to replace a tape measure or calibrated rangefinder.
